Convergence of Stuff: When is the right place and device?

7290353_366aca0809_m.jpgWhile I have argued before with folks about how I don’t want all of my life to be merged (or converged or mind-melded) into one device (read cellphone), it does appear that this is the case for all of these newfangled apps and services that are in the Web 2.0 camp. I don’t want a device that plays video, music, ringtones, photos, phone calls and voice messaging..I just don’t want that. I would lose it and that would be everything gone!

But, I cannot lose the web. I just go online somewhere else and my stuff is there. Right where I left it.

For example, I know Wikispaces site now allows for WAY EASY integration of media from such sources as YouTube, Odeo and MySpace. I was so happy when I figured out how to upload and link to an mp3 in the wiki and now, I can add a video greeting from Hellodeo or embed other media with a simple copy-paste-done. Cool.

And, I found Dabble, which appears to be a way to “collect” video from around the web (Google Video+YouTube (is that the same now?), Ourmedia, Internet Archive, etc) and connect with folks who have the same interests. Hmmm…more to consider.

Of course there is always SuprGlu for keeping my little Flickr, Techy-Feely, del.icio.us, lastFM self together in one place.

Why do I like convergence on the web just fine but not on my belt?

What? Me a geek? Just because I have eleven (yes, 11) Yoda items in my office as well as my Kermit bag (thanks family!!) along with a variety of other stereotypical references to Muppets, Star Wars, Star Trek, Looney Tunes, dinosaurs, and more? Is that enough to cause me to proclaim geek pride?

Yes, it is.

I spent the day in meetings about 3 hours away and got back late. I hardly ever get to my campus at night and tonight the fountains in the pond were on and looked great. I only wish I could have had a long exposure so you could see all of the Canada geese sitting on the pond as well.
We have a resident flock of geese who herald in the fall semester and hang out with us until summer arrives.

Today is my birthday. The 44th, which is magic with the double numbers and all. I decided to have a personal project for my 45th year and this Project 365 of posting a picture a day is that project.

So, without further ado, here is picture 1 as I celebrate my day in high fashion with lunch, some shopping, wandering around downtown Knoxville and finishing it off with a ghost tour of historic Knoxville sites. This photo was taken downtown Knoxville at the Andrew Jackson Hotel, AKA the AJ building. Hank Williams might have died in this hotel..the details are sketchy but he was carried out of it on his way to a gig in Ohio and was dead when he got there. The ghost tour guide told us that guests hear somone playing guitar at the end of the hall on the fourth floor. Good story to me.

cramming 43 hours into a day

I fascinated by this fairly recent study (funded by Yahoo!, among others) about the overlapping of technlogies within a typical family. Doing that equals to more hours of activity per day. From the report:

While using the Internet, people are also doing two or three other things, often watching TV or talking on the phone,” said Mike Hess, global director of research at OMD, part of Omnicom Group

As I sit here, writing in my blog, listening to a record, waiting for two other sites to load in different tabs, heating up a pan to cook pancakes for breakfast, I think I get it!

How many hours do we need to cram in the day? Lately, I am being drawn back towards Voluntary Simplicity and the concept of montasking. Even John Mayer mentioned monotasking in a recent interview I read in Performing Songwriter magazine (of course, i was reading that while I was on the elliptical trainer at the gym – so much for monotasking!)

I am going to strive to focus on the task at hand…whatever that might be. We’ll see how it goes. Does technology help you do more or cause you to do more?

Goodbye to an old friend

The problem with the feely part of living is the pain of saying goodbye. We said goodbye to our oldest cat yesterday. She was 19 1/2 years old. It was time but it was not easy and it should not be easy.

Rest well, Cubby. We will miss you.
