CSI: Code Search Investigations – Getting your videos out of Videoegg

Just a quick notation about my sleuthing and its eventual success (Yay!)

I got a notification that the Videoegg hosting server (my.videoegg.com) is being decomissioned at the end of May. The note suggested that I go get my content so off I went.

Problem: The download video link did not work – tried it on several computers with every browser I could throw at it but the problem was the link. Frustrating…they tell me to go get my files but then don’t give me any way to get them.

So, I tried adding videoegg.com to my Greasemonkey script but no luck.
Tried right clicking, etc..but the Flash plugin will have none of that.
Then, I dove into the code.

By clicking on the SHARE button and then looking at the HTML code that they offer to copy/paste for embedding the video, I could see that the server name there was download.videoegg.com/gid-blahblahblah. Hmm, I thought to myself…the broken link for downloading also starts with /gid-blahblahblah. What if I get the link and just insert the server name in the front of it.

To quote Victor in Young Frankenstein: It. Could. Work.

And…It. Did. Work.

Summary:

  • Go to Videoegg and log in
  • Click the Download button and get the error message for file/page not found.
  • Stick in “download.videoegg.com” in front of the url (after the http://) and hit return.
  • File should download.

I have my whopping two videos now!

Checking in with the @Last 5 Playlist….

Here is the latest:

Something I have noticed about my use of iTunes now…with the iPod touch, I am much more concerned about making sure I have the Album artwork loaded and I am spending time scouring the web looking for album covers that I don’t have in iTunes.

Flipping through Coverflow (the album art view) with a bunch of gray covers with lighter gray music notes in them, is a little depressing. :)

KD Lawson Photography Studio

We dedicated the Photography studio at school to the instructor who died last semester. He was instrumental, no…critical…..no…..essential to the creation of this place and the building where it lives. The ceremony was nice and the studio is fantastic. I can only hope that folks will say the kinds of things about me that they say about him.More stuff on the Technology Update blog at my school.

Earth Hour – turn off your lights on Saturday between 8 pm and 9 pm local time

Maybe change out some of those  bulbs  with CF or LED? Earth Hour US site  Slightly associated, I have been interested in the argument about white backgrounds vs. black backgrounds for web sites (see Google’s response). Not sure which side is right but I know I tend to design more on the light side so I would like to know.

A map of the blogosphere…

Isn’t it cool being part of a groovy black, teal and blue map like this??http://discovermagazine.com/2007/may/map-welcome-to-the-blogosphere/blogosphere.jpg

P365 – back to the “good old days”

At least two of my three readers have told me that they miss the Project 365 daily picture posting. I do, too! And, I don’t take nearly as many pictures as I used to. (that could be a good thing, I’ll have to ask iPhoto!)

But, I think this type of “wireless pet containment” is not quite the application PetSafe had in mind. We were considering this for the dog but decided to go with traditional fencing instead.

The internet back in 1995

Wow..it is going to change the way we learn, work and play!!! Can’t wait to see how!

They cite 35-40 million people on the internet. I just checked and according to the Internet World Stats page the number now is closer to 1.3 billion. This is courtesy of the great work by the folks at Waxy.org as they digitize VHS tapes about the internet.

The source for my email signature at work

Most of my three readers have seen my signature in my work email. It sums up pretty darn well how I feel about all this tech…sometimes, it is just magical.

I found the original saying on a card someone gave me a long time ago but it was a paraphrase I discovered when I finally tracked down the source and the actual quote, which is the third of his three “laws” of prediction:

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”
–Arthur C. Clarke

Sad to hear that Clarke died last night. I enjoyed what stories of his I read and I know there are many more for me to enjoy.

Jessica Hagy has a great indexed tribute that ties into my signature: indexed: He knew science fiction didn’t have to be an oxymoron.
